Our Mission

The St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating the root causes of homelessness in the Greater Waterbury Area. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of the homeless, hungry and mentally ill through professionally supportive relationships with caring adults, in order to assist them in achieving their highest potential of wellness and independence, and move them from poverty to an economically viable standard of living. To this end, the Mission has established a network to address each cause contributing to or allowing a person or family to become homeless. However, this can only be accomplished with the cooperation of other nonprofit organizations, the State of Connecticut, the Church, and the private and corporate sectors of our society.

Walk in their Footsteps and Race for Awareness 2011

E-mail Print PDF
About 200 walkers and 61 runners assembled in Library Park on Sunday afternoon, October 23rd for the third annual Walk in their footsteps and Race for awareness, a walk and run event sponsored by St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury.  With the help and guidance of 35 volunteer staff members, and the Waterbury Police Department and Police Explorers, the runners left the Start Line at 1pm following a deep green vintage roadster for a 5K run encircling the center of Waterbury.  A few minutes later, the walkers stepped off in the opposite direction on the 2.5 mile walk.  The walk route took participants through the St. Vincent DePaul Mission’s Thrift Store, Soup Kitchen, and Emergency Shelter, traveling along the streets and into the facilities where the poor are able to satisfy their basic needs every day of the week.  The walkers were led by Rev. John Cooney, Pastor, St. John the Evangelist Church, Watertown, and Event Sponsors Victor Atkins, Bradshaw Chrysler Jeep and James Welcome, Law Firm of James A. Welcome.

Race Director Ray Cavanaugh awarded trophies to Carlos Sanmiento for First Male & Overall Race Winner, to Marco Sanmiento for Second Male Overall, and to Michael Fitzgerald for Third Male Overall.  Trophies also went to Kateri Danay for First Female Overall, to Christine Granja for Second Female Overall, and to Susanne Navas for Third Female Overall.  Medals were awarded to first, second, and third place male and female winners in seven age categories.  Complete results from the race can be found at this link.  Walker teams and top fundraisers were recognized for their fine efforts.  The afternoon program included entertainment by Imprint.  Apples, bananas, oranges, granola bars, and yogurt were available to everyone, courtesy of Shoprite of Waterbury and Jarjura’s Market.  Dunkin Donuts provided coffee and sweets; Crystal Rock provided water.  The Hills Restaurant offered a casual menu for those with a bigger appetite.

People traveled from West Hartford and Woodbridge and other outlying communities to run or to walk making this a truly wide area event.  We are grateful to all who came to take part in the day.  Many thanks to the crew of volunteers who worked hard to make the day go smoothly and safely.  Finally, we extend our deep gratitude to our sponsors for their generosity.

One Less Meal

The St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen recently received a visit and a donation from Clyde and Earlene at the Double D Diner - a virtual online diner that encourages customers to "Don't Eat It - Donate It!" in order to help feed the hungry.   The Double D Diner is a subsidiary of One Less Meal, Inc.; a nonprofit organization that believes that if everyone consumed one less meal on a regular basis and donated that meal to those in need, we could break the cycle of hunger and poverty that exists in the United States.
