Our Mission

The St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating the root causes of homelessness in the Greater Waterbury Area. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of the homeless, hungry and mentally ill through professionally supportive relationships with caring adults, in order to assist them in achieving their highest potential of wellness and independence, and move them from poverty to an economically viable standard of living. To this end, the Mission has established a network to address each cause contributing to or allowing a person or family to become homeless. However, this can only be accomplished with the cooperation of other nonprofit organizations, the State of Connecticut, the Church, and the private and corporate sectors of our society.

Newbury Place, Southbury

Newbury Place, a unique gift shop in Southbury, will be hosting a Coat Drive to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Mission from 9:30AM to 5:30PM on Saturday, January 9th, at their location of 41 Oak Tree Road in Southbury, Connecticut (http://www.newburyplace.com/directions.php).  A $10 Newbury Place gift certificate, to be used on that date, will be provided to anyone that donates a coat (one gift certificate per family).

The owners of the gift shop conceived the idea in an effort to provide winter clothing assistance for the homeless and poor in Waterbury and the surrounding towns.  Last winter, with the threat of hypothermia for many, St. Vincent DePaul’s homeless shelter averaged 117 to 120 guests every night.

Newbury Place offers a considerable variety of housewarming, baby shower, jewelry and wedding gifts, with free gift wrapping included for every purchase.  A very special ‘thank you’ is extended to the owners of Newbury Place (Liz Page, Eva Schick, and Amy Cameron) for their generosity.

Walk in their Footsteps Team Walk October 18, 2009

Walk in their Footsteps Team Walk

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could keep the 235 walkers away.

Sunday looked quite gloomy for the St. Vincent DePaul Mission walk.  The rains came down in buckets all morning.  The cold wind added to the falling temperatures.  Then, by noon the snow started.  The Volunteers were about to give up.  But the spirit of the people prevailed and at 1:00 pm it all but stopped.  Just a small drizzle, “we can handle that.  After all the homeless people can do it every day so can we for one hour,” was the thoughts of the young crowd, eager to get started.

At 1:00Pm armed with umbrellas and ponchos Fr. Joe Donnelly began the march through the streets of Waterbury.  Their path was that of the typical homeless person moving from place to place in town.

The “Walkers” stopped at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen on Baldwin Street, then continued past the Mission’s Affordable Housing complex and ended at the Homeless Shelter where everyone was welcome to a hot cocoa or coffee and refreshments.

Then came the rain again.

Inside, Bishop Peter Rosazza, Auxiliary, Bishop of Hartford, re-dedicated the Shelter building in memory of the Corporation’s founder the late Fr. Philip Cascia.  A plaque with Father Cascia’s picture and an inscription now hang in the Shelter.

In spite of the weather, all had an excellent time.  The “Walkers” gained firsthand knowledge of the plight of the homeless people served by the Mission.

Thirty Years of Serving the Poor

This year, the St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary of serving the poor in Waterbury and surrounding towns. What began as a small thrift store in 1978 has grown to include the largest homeless shelter in Connecticut, a soup kitchen and food pantry; an expanded thrift store; housing units for the working poor; a group home, and mental health division providing residential supervised and supportive services scattered throughout the city of Waterbury.

We will celebrate this great occasion with a dinner on Sunday March 29th at 1PM at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. As part of our celebration we will honor the late Mary Mauriello, longtime director of the shelter, and Lillian Maffia, longtime director of the soup kitchen for their service. We invite you to join us in celebrating this anniversary and in supporting the work of the St. Vincent DePaul Mission. Tickets are available by contacting the Mission Office at 754-0000.
