Our Mission

The St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating the root causes of homelessness in the Greater Waterbury Area. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of the homeless, hungry and mentally ill through professionally supportive relationships with caring adults, in order to assist them in achieving their highest potential of wellness and independence, and move them from poverty to an economically viable standard of living. To this end, the Mission has established a network to address each cause contributing to or allowing a person or family to become homeless. However, this can only be accomplished with the cooperation of other nonprofit organizations, the State of Connecticut, the Church, and the private and corporate sectors of our society.

This year, the St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary of serving the poor in Waterbury and surrounding towns. What began as a small thrift store in 1978 has grown to include the largest homeless shelter in Connecticut, a soup kitchen and food pantry; an expanded thrift store; housing units for the working poor; a group home, and mental health division providing residential supervised and supportive services scattered throughout the city of Waterbury.

We will celebrate this great occasion with a dinner on Sunday March 29th at 1PM at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. As part of our celebration we will honor the late Mary Mauriello, longtime director of the shelter, and Lillian Maffia, longtime director of the soup kitchen for their service. We invite you to join us in celebrating this anniversary and in supporting the work of the St. Vincent DePaul Mission. Tickets are available by contacting the Mission Office at 754-0000.
