Our Mission

The St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating the root causes of homelessness in the Greater Waterbury Area. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of the homeless, hungry and mentally ill through professionally supportive relationships with caring adults, in order to assist them in achieving their highest potential of wellness and independence, and move them from poverty to an economically viable standard of living. To this end, the Mission has established a network to address each cause contributing to or allowing a person or family to become homeless. However, this can only be accomplished with the cooperation of other nonprofit organizations, the State of Connecticut, the Church, and the private and corporate sectors of our society.

Walk in their Footsteps Team Walk

Join the supporters of the St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury as we walk in the footsteps of poor, hungry, homeless, and mentally disabled people who traverse the streets of Waterbury every day of the week seeking the basic necessities of life – food, clothing and shelter.  The event will be held on Sunday October 24th from 1PM to 4PM.

Walk in their footsteps is a team walk with the purpose of raising awareness to the effects of poverty and unemployment in the Greater Waterbury Area.  The traveled route will take the participants through the St. Vincent DePaul Mission’s Thrift Store, Soup Kitchen, and Shelter, the same facilities where the poor receive clothing, food, and a place to sleep, with the guidance of Mission staff.  All of these benefits for the poor have been made possible through the generous support of donors over the last 30 years.  We encourage students, youth groups, clubs, civic organizations and families, dedicated to charitable service, to assemble a team for this great learning experience. Please note that students, youth groups and children under 18 must be supervised by their leaders, chaperones or parents.

Walkers will gather in the lot next to Dumouchel Paper (corner of Market Sq and Benedict St.) at 1:00p.m.  The route will take them to the Homeless Shelter on Benedict Street, then to Bank Street and West Main Street to the Thrift Store on Willow Street, then to the Soup Kitchen on Baldwin Street.  Refreshments will be served at the Soup Kitchen.

The registration fee is $10.00 per person, age 9 or older.  We encourage each person to obtain donations from family and friends.  Each person must complete the Participant Registration Form.  Participants will receive a Walk in their footsteps tee-shirt as a memento of the event.  Team Leaders must complete the Team Registration Form also.  Teams may bring their own flags or banners.

Registrations may be made on-line or using paper forms.

For on-line registrations:
Team Leaders should use the Team Registration Form to register their team name first.  Once the name is approved in 2 business days, it will be available to participants when they register for the walk using the Secure Online Registration Payment Form.  This form also may be used at any time by walkers who are not members of a team, volunteer staff, and by non-participating friends of St. Vincent DePaul Mission who wish to make a donation in support of the walkathon.  Important:

  • Individual on-line registration payment forms must be filled out by an adult who is responsible for himself/herself if walking and/or for his/her family members who may be walking.
  • A child or children of the same family walking without a parent MUST be part of a registered team.

You may register using the Secure Online Registration Payment Form now or continue reading below to obtain forms for paper registration.

One Less Meal

The St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen recently received a visit and a donation from Clyde and Earlene at the Double D Diner - a virtual online diner that encourages customers to "Don't Eat It - Donate It!" in order to help feed the hungry.   The Double D Diner is a subsidiary of One Less Meal, Inc.; a nonprofit organization that believes that if everyone consumed one less meal on a regular basis and donated that meal to those in need, we could break the cycle of hunger and poverty that exists in the United States.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could keep the 235 walkers away.

Sunday looked quite gloomy for the St. Vincent DePaul Mission walk.  The rains came down in buckets all morning.  The cold wind added to the falling temperatures.  Then, by noon the snow started.  The Volunteers were about to give up.  But the spirit of the people prevailed and at 1:00 pm it all but stopped.  Just a small drizzle, “we can handle that.  After all the homeless people can do it every day so can we for one hour,” was the thoughts of the young crowd, eager to get started.

At 1:00Pm armed with umbrellas and ponchos Fr. Joe Donnelly began the march through the streets of Waterbury.  Their path was that of the typical homeless person moving from place to place in town.

The “Walkers” stopped at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen on Baldwin Street, then continued past the Mission’s Affordable Housing complex and ended at the Homeless Shelter where everyone was welcome to a hot cocoa or coffee and refreshments.

Then came the rain again.

Inside, Bishop Peter Rosazza, Auxiliary, Bishop of Hartford, re-dedicated the Shelter building in memory of the Corporation’s founder the late Fr. Philip Cascia.  A plaque with Father Cascia’s picture and an inscription now hang in the Shelter.

In spite of the weather, all had an excellent time.  The “Walkers” gained firsthand knowledge of the plight of the homeless people served by the Mission.
